World Media Summit draws enthusiastic reactions

BEIJING, Oct. 11 — Media professionals around the globe spoke highly of the 2nd Presidium Meeting of the World Media Summit (WMS), held in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou Thursday, saying it would help boost the development of journalism and strengthen media cooperation.
David S. C. Liu, a senior advisor to The New York Times, voiced his hope that the WMS would reach out further still and win global influence.
He said more efforts were needed to publicize and promote the WMS Global Prizes for Journalism, adding that the prizes would eventually be among the most influential awards in the world.
Zheng Yide, editor-in-chief of The China Press, a Chinese-language daily in New York, said he hoped that the prizes would break Western media’s monopoly on world opinion.
Encouraged by the prizes, the establishment of which was decided upon at the meeting, media professionals should stick to their code of ethics and provide truthful, fair and just information for the development of human civilization, he said.
Nabil Ahmed, a journalist with Qatar News Agency, said the meeting in Hangzhou had built a platform for the advancement of journalism around the world.
He hoped that after the meeting, new ideas and measures would be put forward to help developing and poverty-stricken countries develop their media organizations.
Khalifa Abdullah, vice president of Qatar Media Corporation, said China always supports people in developing countries and the Arab world, and added that the meeting was conducive to the transmission of fair news reports about the Middle East.
Mohammed Bahari, chief of Qatar’s official newspaper The Motherland, warmly welcomed the establishment of the WMS Global Prizes for Journalism, saying they would not only encourage journalists in different countries, but also push forward the development of journalism on a global level.
Leaders and representatives from world-renowned media organizations attended Thursday’s meeting to discuss the new challenges the media sector faces.
The first WMS, held in 2009, was co-launched by Xinhua and eight other media organizations including News Corporation, AP, Thomson Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo News, BBC, Turner Broadcasting System Inc and Google Inc. The second summit was held in Moscow last year.
The WMS aims to build an efficient platform for global media to communicate with one another and pool collective wisdom, discuss survival and development, and talk about cooperation and the media’s future.[db:内容2]
