HOUSTON, May 4 — Twenty-eight Chinese students from colleges in eight southern U.S. states received an annual Chinese government award here on Saturday.
At a ceremony at the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, Deputy Consul General Li Guixi handed out the 2012 National Scholarship for Outstanding Self-Financed Chinese Students abroad.
The recipients came from more than ten colleges in southern U.S. states, and their majors cover physics, chemistry, optics, computer, environmental engineer and mathematics.
“The recipients are very outstanding Chinese students and many of them have papers published on professional magazines,” said Consul Zhang Yiqun.
For the year of 2012, the award, which was established in 2003 by the Chinese government, was presented to 489 Chinese students pursuing diplomas abroad, according to Zhang
“Overseas students are valuable human resources of China and important contributors to the country’s future construction and development,” Li said at the awarding-ceremony.
The award was aimed to encourage overseas Chinese students to excel in their studies and better serve their country in the future, he said.
“The award is not only a honor, but also an encouragement to overseas Chinese students,” said Wang Qing, an award-recipient from Tulane University. “We will continue to work hard and better serve our country after graduation,” said Wang.

BEIJING, April 9 — The Chinese government will expand overseas Chinese-language education to better cater for rising interest in China and its language worldwide, according to a speech by an official on Monday.
The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council (OCAO) will cooperate with foreign education authorities to position Chinese-language education as a mainstream education choice abroad, said Li Haifeng, the OCAO director, at a meeting attended by overseas Chinese social organizations from across the world.
The OCAO will train more teachers for overseas Chinese-language education, striving to integrate it with local cultures and develop more online and multi-media teaching materials to meet the diversified demands of overseas youngsters, said Li.
Chinese-language education is an important way to inherit Chinese culture, the official said. The OCAO has trained nearly 17,000 teachers for overseas education since 2010, and has helped more than 270 overseas schools or education organizations improve teaching facilities.
In the next five years, the OCAO will invite 100,000 overseas Chinese youths back to China to participate in summer or winter camps and “seek their roots,” said Li.
Such camps have attracted more than 40,000 overseas Chinese youths since 2010, he added.
