Illiteracy rate increases to 19 pct among Saudi women

RIYADH, Aug. 25 — Saudi Arabia announced a five-year action plan after a rise in the illiteracy rate to 19 percent among Saudi women, Al Madina newspaper reported Sunday.
Saudi Education Ministry noted that the highest number of illiterate women is in villages and remote places, attributing the reasons to shortage of female teachers and poor transportation.
Saudi Arabia celebrated last year the reduction of illiteracy among men and women by 60 percent to a low rate of 4 percent, through an action plan that continued for 40 years.[db:内容2]
