Enjoy “Songzhuang style” this autumn

BEIJING, Nov. 4 — The Eighth Culture and Art Festival of Songzhuang kicked off on Oct. 31 in Beijing’s Songzhuang, the largest art zone in both China and the world.
This year’s festival, themed ‘Everyone-Art,’ consists of a series of themed exhibitions, parallel exhibitions and cultural activities at Songzhuang’s Xiaopu Art Zone.
More than 1,500 artists in Songzhuang are taking part, as well as artists from abroad. This year’s festival will be bigger than ever before.
Diverse art works will be displayed at various venues, including the Sunshine International Art Museum, Songzhuang Art Museum, G-dotartspace, the Czech China Contemporary Art Gallery and Tree Art Museum. There will also be music and drama activities, lectures and symposiums. An art auction will also be held during the festival.
This year’s festival offers visitors the opportunity to understand the development of Songzhuang over the past 20 years, since the artists originally residing in the Artists Village at the Old Summer Palace moved to the area in 1994.
A special exhibition — ‘WE: 1994-2013 — The 20th Anniversary Collective Exhibition of China Song Zhuang Artists’ — will be held at the Songzhuang Art Museum from Oct. 31 to Nov. 18.
The exhibition features the self-portraits of more than 700 Songzhuang artists, including painters, poets, sculptors, rock musicians and film makers, and showcases their work over the past two decades.
As is implied by its theme ‘Everyone-Art,’ the festival recognizes that art is closely related to people’s lives and anybody can be an artist. Spectators will be offered opportunities to interact with the ‘indigenous’ artists on the scene and work on artistic creations in galleries, studios and even art-themed restaurants in the zone.
This year’s event is co-hosted by the Committee of Xiaopu Village in Tongzhou District, the Beijing Song Zhuang Art Development Foundation and Beijing Council for the Promotion of Arts in Tongzhou.
