Located in the Yellow River valley, Henan province homes to three of seven ancient capitals in China: Luoyang, Kaifeng and Anyang. This province has more historical relics than any other province. Trace the wonder of Longmen Grottoes, one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China (the other two are Yungang and Mogao), immerse in the amaze Shaolin Kung Fu in Shaolin Temple and experience the historical vicissitude of Kaifeng, “the Capitals of Seven Dynasties”.

Tour Itinerary

Day1 Arrival in Luoyang

Upon your arrival in Luoyang railway station, picked up by local tour guide and transferred to your hotel. After some rest, visit Luoyang Museum which is located in the center of the city. As the only comprehensive history museum in Luoyang, it reflects the rich history of Luoyang. This museum is home to many cultural relics of over 1 million year’s history, and the world-famous Tang Tri-colored Pottery etc. exhibits from different dynasties, which bring you a historical exploration.

Day 2 Luoyang ( B, L )

Today visit the Longmen Grottoes, one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China (the other two are Yungang and Mogao), 30 minutes drive away from Luoyang city. The grottoes, carved on both banks, are formed in 1 km of the stretch of Yihe River, a north flowing tributary of Luo River, having the favorable location where two mountains meet each other between which flows the Yihe River. Ranging from 1 inch (25 mm) to 57 feet (17 m) in height, Longmen Grottoes has over 100,000 statues within its 1,400 caves, also including nearly 2,500 stelae and inscriptions, hence the name “Forest of Ancient Stelae". Then tour the White Horse Temple, which is famous as “No. 1 Ancient Temple under Heaven”, “the first Buddhist temple in China” and “the cradle of Chinese Buddhism” with a history of 1,900 years. As the legend said, the White Horse Temple was built to commemorate the efforts the white horses had made to carry the Buddhist scriptures and statues back from India. You can enjoy both traditional Chinese temples and newly-built ones with Indian style.

Longmen Grottoes

Day 3 Luoyang-Mt. Songshan-Kaifeng ( B,L )

In the morning, tour Shaolin Temple in Songshan Mountain, 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) west of Dengfeng city. Built in the 5th century, this temple is well-known for its association with Chinese martial arts, especially with Shaolin Kung Fu. In 2013, Shaolin Temple and the Chinese largest-scale Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the “Historic Monuments of Dengfeng”. The highlights in the temple include the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Grand Hall, the Sutra Depository, Hall of Thousands of Buddha and the Pagoda Forest. After this visit, drive to Kaifeng city, which is located along the southern bank of the Yellow River. As one of the Seven Ancient Capitals of China with a history beginning from Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476 BC), it is also known as “the Capitals of Seven Dynasties”.

Day 4 Kaifeng ( B,L )

Today explore the famous “Northern Water Town” in China --- Kaifeng, enjoying a long history over 2,700 years. First visit the Iron Pagoda, a brick pagoda tower set with brown glazed tiles on the whole tower body, hence the name duo to a vista in iron color. And the decorative patterns on the tiles include vivid flying apsaras and Kirins etc. It locates where a wooden pagoda used to be burnt down by lightning fire in 1044 C.E. Then visit Dragon Pavilion Park, the largest scenic spot in Kaifeng, which was turned into an imperial palace in the later Liang Dynasty. As the main construction in Dragon Pavilion Park, Dragon Pavilion is a grand wooden hall of 26.07-meter high, built on a 13-meter blue brick terrace with 72 steps. Climbing up to the Dragon Pavilion, enjoy rare cultural relics, and dragons playing with pearls are carved on the ceilings and walls, and also your visual feast with a good panorama of Kaifeng city.

Iron Pagoda

Day 5 Kaifeng ( B,L )

Today, first visit Xiangguo Temple, one of the ten famous temples in Chinese history and plays an important role in the development of Buddhism in China. Enjoy the magnificent architecture and the well-arranged layout of the temple, which were mainly built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Those include Mountain Gate, Paifang, Heavenly Kings Hall, Daxiongbaodian Hall (Hall of Sakyamuni), Arhat Hall and Sutra Hall etc. After this tour, you will be transferred to train station or airport for your next destination.
