Australia gears up for New Year’s Eve

SYDNEY, Dec. 30 — Thousands of extra police will be deployed in Australia’s most populous state of New South Wales on New Year’s Eve to keep everything in order, according to Australian Associated Press.
An additional 3,000 police will be put in place across the state, while Sydney alone will see 2,500 policemen on Tuesday night.
Police Minister Michael Gallacher Monday urged people to make sure they don’t wake up in 2014 in a police cell or a sobering-up center. “We are there encouraging people to enjoy New Year’s Eve for what it means,” he said.
The police have also urged people who head to Sydney Harbor to use public transport as a number of roads will be closed in the area.
Meanwhile, Australian largest telecommunication company Telecom Telstra said that this year Australians are expected to send a record 101 million text messages on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the first time the 100 million record will be broken.
Telstra also expects that over 5.7 million picture messages will be sent during the period.
“Whether you want to send a shot of your party dress to a friend or wish them a Happy New Year with a meme, sending picture messages is the next best thing to being there,” Director of Corporate Marketing Inese Kingsmill said in a statement.[db:内容2]
